Announcing the Parody Comp Part 2!

A post to wallace-l by George Carr a couple of days ago was the impetus for me to make the old parody comp winners and entries available again. That was just the first step...

Entries are now open for the 2007 David Foster Wallace Parody Competition!

George is running the comp with The Howling Fantods hosting. Follow the read more link below for details.

Three years ago, we held a DFW parody contest, competing for a copy of the then-new volume "Understanding David Foster Wallace" by Marshall Boswell. I was, somewhat startlingly, the winner of that contest.

But three years is plenty of time between contests.  So I'll host the next one, starting today.  In the next thirty days, on or before July 15, 2007, write and email a parody of DFW's work for judging by me. Note that, just like last time, all of DFW's work is open for parody; you can write in the style of GWCH or Oblivion, or anything in between.  And there aren't any technical restrictions, such as length; write whatever you want.

Reading through the old entries, it occurs to me that the previous judge(s) asked that the pieces involve a car in a driveway, and it might be actually helpful for contestants to have a theme or motif to work with.  So I'll add the suggestion (but not the requirement) that if it gives you inspiration, your piece can involve a celebrity underwear scandal.

If I get a lot of submissions, I'll choose a round of finalists before making a final choice. The prize will be an Advance Readers' Copy of Oblivion, from my personal collection.

Thanks, and good luck,
George

Email your entries to georgecarr at gmail dot com on or before the deadline of July 15 2007.

[Additional Prize(s): The Howling Fantods has donated a second prize, A copy of the 'Consider the Lobster' promo booklet, containing the title essay from the collection. Get in touch with me if you have a DFW related item you would like to donate to the prize pool.]
