10:10 AM – 11:10 AM—Panel Two: “Filmic Entertainments”

Moderator: Carrie Shanafelt, CUNY-Graduate Center

Alison Wielgus, University of Iowa

“From the Abyss: James O. Incandenza and the Films of Infinite Jest”

I found this theoretically challenging at first (mostly due to unfamiliarity), but it was very interesting, particularly when Alison talked more about J.O Incandenza's prescence in IJ as mediated by film and the difficulty of describing film semiotics using language.

Rodney Taveira, University of Sydney

“In the Face of David Foster Wallace”

Australian speaker (good on you, Rodney). A wildly entertaining paper. Rodney develops a parallel between the cop (with a hard core porn addction) who is searching for the 'orgasm face' in  Big Red Son and Wallace's quest in listerature to engage and strip back and be really real. Wonderful 'montage' of the use of face in Wallace's writing.

David Hering, University of Liverpool

“Dreams Within Dreams: Wallace, Lynch, Oblivion”

Lynchian geek out. David presented the parallels in Wallace's and Lynch's narrative stategies through Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, and Inland Empire. Spectacular!

Evidently in California

Cole travels to California and writes about DFW, Evidently in California. (Thanks, Cole)

In a bookshop yesterday I started reading the essay about DFW's BIWHM in Zadie Smith's Changing My Mind: Occasional Essays, yesterday. I'll definitely be picking it up later today. (I noticed she wrote that hardcore Wallace nerds call themselves howling fantods... is this true? If so, why haven't I noticed?)

Finally, hit the contact us link with any news or links, I've not had the time to keep an eye on things while here.

Rest Day Today

I've been doing the tourist thing full time the last three days, time for a rest prior to the conference tomorrow.

Empire State Building, Guggenheim, Central Park, Natural History, Statue of Liberty, Top of the Rock, Bodies, MOMA, and Carrie Fisher's show at Studio 54.

Great meals at momofuku ssam bar (the duck) and at the Pongsri Thai Restaurant (beef red curry, very hot, super fast service).

Big shout out to Giant Robot in East Village for great conversation and even better t-shirts.

Wow

...and I thought Sydney was a big city...

Just spent the evening over at Barcade in Brooklyn consuming equal parts Brooklyn Weisse and old-school arcade games. All games are a quarter to play, I'm planning on heading back over before I fly home.
